Attention Testing & Training

Attention Testing
Dr. Meyer offers attention testing for individuals of all ages who are receiving or considering treatment for attention deficits (e.g. pharmacological intervention, neurofeedback, dietary measures), under the care of a physician or other care provider. Specific measures include behavior rating scales, clinical interviews, and a computerized test of auditory and/or visual attention (T.O.V.A.). It is recommended that those who are currently receiving pharmacological intervention, or are about to begin a medication trial, complete a baseline assessment (medication-free) and a follow-up battery (on medication), in order to examine the impact of pharmacological intervention on performance. This approach can be useful in terms of understanding the measurable effects of intervention, as well as areas of attentional functioning that have been less responsive to treatment.

Working Memory Training
Dr. Meyer now offers Cogmed Working Memory TrainingTM through her practice. Cogmed is an evidence-based program for helping children, adolescents, and adults improve attention by training their working memory. Working memory is the ability to briefly remember information and to use this information in one's thinking and problem solving. In daily life, working memory plays an important role in the capacity to follow multi-step instructions, perform the various steps involved in sequencing a task, and sustain attention and impulse control. Individuals with working memory challenges may have difficulties staying focused, ignoring distractions, starting and following through with tasks, following multi-step instructions (particularly after a short delay), and performing tasks with high sequencing demands (such as getting ready for school). Studies also show that challenges with working memory often lead to difficulties in school, particularly with regard to reading comprehension and math.

Cogmed is based on strong scientific research, and can be completed in the convenience of one's home. Studies have shown that Cogmed is effective an improving working memory, with associated improvements in school performance, reading comprehension, math skills, and behavior. Research has also found that Cogmed leads to greater gains than medication alone, and these improvements are sustained over time.
